X-Wing and TIE Fighter have such an elevated place in the hearts of so many gamers that they have passed beyond mere computer games and into the realm of legend. LucasArts knows when it has a good thing and has packaged and rebundled these games incessantly, with add-on discs, deluxe editions, bundles, and so forth. In the latest repackaging, it has taken the complete X-Wing and TIE Fighter, with all missions and campaigns, and a limited version of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and bundled them in one package. Having them all together in one box helps reduce shelf space and gives new computer users who may have missed these classics a chance to try them, but the bundle feels curiously unfulfilling.

No special new missions or campaigns have been added for this release, and gameplay has only been very lightly tweaked by a few bug fixes. The major new appeal is complete hardware-acceleration support for X-Wing and TIE Fighter, which none of the previous bundles or upgrades offered. Support via Direct3D is stable and fairly effective. Essentially, both games have been retrofitted with the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter engine. Smoothing and shading, some enhanced textures and modeling, and a few lighting effects generally make things look better but not outstanding. These are still old games, and even the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter engine is looking a bit long in the tooth. No matter what hardware tricks Lucas uses, you can't escape the fact that space-combat games of the last six months (Wing Commander: Prophecy, Descent: Freespace, even X-COM: Interceptor) look much better. The cockpits and wraparound material have been enhanced but still look a bit dated and even cheesy at times.

These are classic games that belong on every computer gamer's shelf, no doubt about it. The packages are completely Windows native, easily installed, and easy on the hard drive. With about 250 total missions, it's hard to really complain.

Playing the DOS version in DOSBox is probably the easiest and most straightforward way to experience the game.

Collector's CD-ROM Edition[edit]

The original release came on five floppies and ran at 320x200 resolution while the collectors CD-ROM came on a single CD and featured an upgraded game engine based on TIE Fighter with support for gouraud-shading. This version also includes voice-overs for several characters in the game. Both versions run great in DOSBox without major issues and don't require a joystick to play.

Collector Series Edition[edit]

In 1998 a bundle of X-Wing and TIE Fighter ported to Windows 95/98 was released. This version features further enhanced graphics due to an upgrade to the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter engine. The game now included 3D-acceleration support (Direct3D), the use of proper textures instead of primitive gouraud-shading and completely redone concourse graphics. The iMUSE dynamic music system, however, was removed in favor of conventional CD-audio tracks. Furthermore, this version requires a joystick/gamepad and cannot be played with the mouse unless a joystick-emulation program such as PPJoy is used.The problems and fixes in this article mostly relate to this version of the game.

Game installer won't run under 64-bit versions of Windows[edit]

Since the X-wing and Tie-Fighter installers are 16-bit programs they won't work in 64-bit operating systems. To remedy this use the appropriate fixed installer found here: [1] to create an updated install disk with which you can install and run the game. Detailed instructions are found here: [2]. The autostart menu seems to be bugged so you might need to run the setup.exe file directly from the disk you created.

Game doesn't run on modern versions of Windows[edit]

Apply the Windows XP compatibility fix above.

When trying to run the game you get a popup to install DirectX[edit]
