How to install Skyrim Script Extender, Skyrim Unbound, the Unofficial Skyrim Patch and the Sky UI mods for Elderscrolls V Skyrim

The Elderscrolls V Skyrim is an amazing game. Bethesda, since beginning the Elderscrolls series with Arena has created wonderful open worlds for action role-playing game players with unparalleled freedom to play exactly how you want to play. Skyrim, the fifth game in the series is no exception. In Skyrim, the player will battle dragons to become the Dragon borne, defeat the dragon Alduin and save the world.

It will reduce CTD's related to running out of vram or hitting the 3.1 GB RAM limit in Skyrim. Sheson's Memory Patch is implemented through SKSE and changes the way. Time for Skyrim Memory Patch 3.0. In this naming tradition this third memory patch will allow Skyrim to use that available space right from the start to fix ILS (infinite loading screen) without side effects and other memory related CTD (crashes to desktop) or freezes. However, SKSE loader already patches tesv.exe before the game starts.

Since the Elderscrolls III: Morrowind, Bethesda also included their Construction Set with the game. The Construction set is a tool with which they created the original game. Using this tool, talented and passionate modders take up the mantle and have extended the scope of the game far beyond its original form by creating literally thousands of mods enhancing and expanding the game in hundreds of different ways. Everything from small single changes to massive landmasses and even total conversions have been created by modders.

Game developers no matter how talented cannot implement everything they wanted to include and squash every bug in the game in the time they had available. Today, I am going to look at mods that make improvements that Bethesda either didn't have time for or didn't think of including in the original game. The mods in this hub are mods that I feel no-one should play Skyrim without.

There are a number of mods that I consider to be essential for any one playing Skyrim. These will fix hundreds of in game bugs, improve and enhance the User Interface and allow you to avoid the in game start (which is a bit long once you have seen it once) and customise your starting position and character.

  • The first mod is Skyrim Script Extender or SKSE. This powerful mod extends Skyrim's scripting abilities and is essential for a large number of the best mods available
  • The second is Sky UI which incorporates MCM (Mod Configuration menu). This not only greatly improves the User Interface it also allows you to configure your mods in game using MCM
  • Skyrim Unbound allows you to customise and even randomise your starting position, equipment and character class when beginning a new game in Skyrim
  • Lastly, the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, the Unofficial Hearthfire Patch, the Unofficial Dragonborn Patch and the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch fix literally hundreds of bugs in game, greatly improving the stability and playability of Skyrim

First, let's look at the mods themselves, before we learn how to install them using Nexus Mod Manager. If you are not familiar with Nexus Mod Manager, it is an excellent mod manager that allows you to download (with its built in download manager), cleanly install, uninstall and update mods with a single click. It also ensures that your mods are loaded in the correct order and organised into configurable categories. To learn more about Nexus Mod Manager, I have a hub that covers it thoroughly which can be found here:

If you are an experienced modder, you may like to use Mod Organizer which contains a number of advanced features not available in Nexus Mod Manager. Mod Organizer installs mods in their own folder to allow easy removal, fixes load order issues, helps install mods with installation errors and even has profiles that can have save games associated with them to allow you to test multiple different mod lists. My hub on Mod Organizer can be found here:

Skyrim Unbound a mod for Elderscrolls V Skyrim by Chinagreenelvis

The first mod I will look at today is Skyrim Unbound. This wonderful mod allows you to configure how and where your character starts when you begin a new game in Skyrim. The opening movie and the mini tutorial which takes place at Helgen is great fun the first time, but when you begin subsequent new games it can become unnecessary. With Skyrim Unbound:

  • The opening sequence can be skipped entirely
  • You can choose from a number of character classes (this simply defines your starting gear, so classes start with gear appropriate to their class)
  • Rather than starting in Helgen, you can start in any town, city, inn or hold as well as in military camps, the wilderness or even jail
  • The main quest can be switched off should you not wish to do it (it can be switched on at any point provided you have installed Sky UI)
  • Random dragon encounters can likewise be switched on or off using this mod

How to install Skyrim Unbound

  • Browse to:http://www.chinagreenelvis.com/gaming/mods/skyrim/skyrim_unbound/
  • Download the latest version (5.4 at the time of writing this hub)
  • Launch Nexus Mod Manager
  • Copy the mod’s zip file into C:GamesNexus Mod ManagerSkyrimMods or your Nexus Mod Manager Mods Folder if you chose a different location
  • Select Add Mod from Folder
  • Activate the Mod

Skyrim Unbound needs Skyrim Script Extender (commonly known as SKSE) to function. So before launching Skyrim to use Skyrim Unbound, we need to install SKSE.

Installing Skyrim Script Extender SKSE for Elderscrolls V Skyrim

In order to run many mods including Skyrim Unbound you need to install Skyrim Script Extender (commonly known as SKSE). SKSE extends Skyrim’s scripting capabilities allowing modders to go beyond the restrictions of the original executable.

  • Install Skyrim Script Extender from the following URL http://skse.silverlock.org/
  • Select the installer from the link and also click the readme which includes the troubleshooting and compatibility notes.

Note: Ensure that your Steam version (if you are using Steam) is the same as required by this mod.

  • Launch the installer and browse to your Skyrim installation folder (if you are using Steam it will be C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonSkyrim. Then click Next
  • Deselect Desktop Shortcut if you are using Nexus Mod Manager

If you are using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 you will need to ensure that SKSE is set to 'Run as Administrator'. To do this:

  • Right click on skse_loader.exe
  • Select Properties
  • Click on the Compatibility tab and then Run this Program as an Administrator

How to Launch Skyrim Script Extender using Nexus Mod Manager

In order to launch both mods using Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE)

  • If you are using Nexus Mod Manager, Launch SKSE as shown below

How to use Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) with Steam

If you are trying to launch Skyrim and are using SKSE, you will need an additional step for SKSE to work

  • First download SKSE Patcher for Steam from the Skyrim Nexus website
  • Copy the file to your Skyrim directory
  • Click Patch

Now, when you click Play in Steam, it will run SKSE which in turn loads Skyrim. You will be able to run all of your mods that depend on SKSE without any issues.

How to use SKSE for Skyrim if you don't use Nexus Mod Manager or Steam

For people who choose not to use Nexus Mod Manager or Steam:

  • Copy your Skyrim Desktop Short cut
  • Rename it SKSE or Skyrim Script Extender
  • Change the target field to '<The location of your Skyrim installation>SkyrimLauncher.exe'

You can see how I configured mine below

Sky UI a mod for Skyrim by the SkyUI Team

Bethesda, when they designed the Skyrim User Interface had consoles uppermost in their minds. Sky UI was created to make it work better for those of us that play Skyrim on a PC using a mouse and keyboard. It makes better use of the space available on the screen. You can see the differences below between the vanilla Skyrim UI and Sky UI.

In addition to arranging your inventory, your available magic spells are similarly re-organised.

Where Sky UI really shines is when it is combined with other mods such as Skyrim Unbound. Sky UI allows you to configure compatible mods on the fly. This feature is known as MCM and is very popular with modders and players of Skyrim. You access another mods configuration by:

  • Hitting Escape to launch the game menu
  • Select Mod Configuration
  • You will see listed all the compatible mods you have installed
  • If you select Skyrim Unbound, you can see below that it is fully configurable.

Without Sky UI, you are stuck with your choices once made, but with it you can make changes later in the game.

How to use Skyrim Unbound with a new game:

Without Sky UI installed:

  • When you start a New game, Skyrim Unbound will ask you a number of questions which you cannot change once selected without starting a new game.

Using Skyrim Unbound with Sky UI installed

When you combine Skyrim Unbound with MCM from Sky UI, you get far more freedom of choice. You could for example, decide not to trigger the main quest, or turn dragon encounters off until your character is more powerful. When you want either enabled, you just open MCM and turn then on. To use Skyrim Unbound with Sky UI:

  • Select New to start a new game
  • Press Escape to launch the game menu
  • Select Mod Configuration (MCM)
  • Choose Skyrim Unbound

This allows you to select from all the available options that this mod grants you.

Class: Choose your characters starting weapons and equipment

Starting location: Select where you want to start the game

Options: Decide whether your character has staring spells and whether there will be dragon encounters and also if the main quest will be triggered.

The Unofficial Skyrim Patch a mod for Skyrim by the Unofficial Patch Project Team Skyrim

The last mod I am going to strongly recommend for anyone installing Skyrim is the Unofficial Skyrim Patch. This mod is now actually part of a series that covers Skyrim and its three expansions. Now the Unofficial Patch Project Team Skyrim have the following patches available:

  • The Unofficial Skyrim Patch
  • The Unofficial Hearthfire Patch
  • The Unofficial Dragonborn Patch and
  • The Unofficial Dawnguard Patch

This mod fixes hundreds of bugs in the original game, fixing bugs with quests, NPCs, items and objects and of course game play bugs. It has also been thoroughly tested. These mods should be the first mod downloaded by anyone playing Skyrim, as the fewer bugs your game has, the better your gaming experience will be. To download this crucial mod, navigate to http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19/?

The only prerequisite is that your game has to be patched to 1.9.32.0.8 or higher for the patch to work.

Conclusion

In today’s hub, I have introduced a number of mods that will greatly enhance your enjoyment of Skyrim which is already brilliant game. The mods I recommend are:

  • Skyrim Unbound, which greatly increases your choices when you start a new character and also allows you to side-step the game's opening sequence.
  • Sky UI updates the User Interface which was designed for consoles primarily and on a PC results in a lot of wasted space. In addition, it allows for on the fly mod configuration of compatible mods through MCM.
  • The the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, the Unofficial Hearthfire Patch, the Unofficial Dragonborn Patch and the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch fixes hundreds of bugs which affect every aspect of the game including game play, quests and objects among others.
  • Finally, I introduced Skyrim Script Extender or SKSE which allows modders to extend Skyrim’s scripts so that they can create mods that would not otherwise be possible.

Skyrim Skse Memory Patch Download

I hope that you have found this hub useful and that these mods are now all installed and enhancing your playing of Skyrim. Thanks for reading, please feel free to leave any comments you may have below.

Which of these mods will you be installing for Skyrim?

No comments yet.

Introduction

SKSE, the Skyrim Script Extender, is a modders resource that expands the scripting capabilities of the original, 32 bit, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. It allows mod authors to go beyond the limitations of the Skyrim Creation Kit, which in turn, allows us access to more expansive mods.

Just to name a few things that SKSE makes possible:

-Key Press detection

-New User Interface elements

-Scaling of physical attributes

Skyrim Skse Memory Patch

-Gamepad mod support

-and more…

Preinstallation

-Requirements

An Up-to-Date Version of Skyrim

SKSE only supports the most recent version of Skyrim: 1.9.32 . Outdated or stolen copies are not guaranteed to work properly, if at all.

For SKSE to work Skyrim must first be launched from one of its executable (.exe) files to establish its system registries and file paths.

7zip or WinRAR will be required to unpack the downloaded archives contents.

Installation

Downloading

-Navigate to SKSE.silverlock.org . Locate the current stable build. At the time of this uploaded the current version is 1.7.3. Select the 7z archive link. For easy access save the SKSE archive to your Desktop. You can delete the archive after it’s installed if you choose.

-Right-click the SKSE archive. Select Extract Here to unpack its contents. A single skse folder will be extracted.

Installation

-Open the skse folder. Read the .txt files in the main folder if desired and or delete them as they are not needed:

– skse_docs.txt

– skse_papyrus_docs.txt

– skse_readme.txt

– skse_whatsnew.txt

If you are not a programmer and are adding SKSE to your game as mod, as the majority of us are doing, you can delete the src folder as well. However, keeping it will not cause you any issues and it could be useful in the unforeseen future.

Highlight the remaining files and copy them:

– skse_1_9_32.dll

– skse_loader.exe

– skse_steam_loader.dll

– src (folder) *optionally

Data (Folder) *and If NOT using Mod Organizer

Skyrim memory allocation patch

In a second window navigate to the Skyrim game folder:

SteamSteamAppsCommonSkyrim

Paste the files and folders into the Skyrim folder.

For non-Mod Organizer users the installation process for SKSE is complete.

Mod Organizer Users

M.O. users should install the SKSE scripts to Mod Organizer itself as a mod. While you could simply follow the aforementioned instructions there are more than a few reasons as to why you shouldn’t. The obvious reason is to keep the Data folder un-modded. However, probably the most significant reason is that you could install a mod to M.O. that overwrites an SKSE script without realizing it and render the script extender useless. While rare, this has happened to M.O. users due to how Mod Organizer handles mod priority.

Navigate to the Mod Organizer folder. If following our guides it will be located in the Skyrim game folder. Within the Mod Organizer folder open the mods folder. Within the mods folder right-click and create New Folder. Name the folder SKSE – Scripts. Open SKSE – Scripts. Back in the original skse folder open the Data folder. Copy the scripts folder. Paste the scripts into the new SKSE – Scripts folder. Delete the skse folder that is on your Desktop.

Open Mod Organizer. Scroll to the bottom of the “Left Pane”. Select and drag the SKSE – Scripts mod to the very top of your Asset – Load Order so that is has a Priority of 0. Activate the checkbox.

Launch

  1. Manual users:

Navigate to: SteamSteamAppsCommon|Skyrim. Right-click the skse_loader.exe . Send a shortcut to Desktop. From now on you will launch the game via this executable.

  • Mod Manager Users:
  • To launch Skyrim through SKSE you simply have to run it from whatever third party application option is provided to you. If SKSE is not automatically detected, and it should be, navigate to SteamSteamAppsCommonSkyrim and launch the game via the skse_loader.exe. Doing this will establish the necessary file paths and allow your mod managers to detect it.

Various mod manager tutorials can be found in the description for those who need additional help.

    Is SKSE Working?

    -Launch Skyrim through SKSE.

-When you have made it to the game’s main menu use the tilde key “ ~ “ to open the console. Type GetSKSEVersion. Push enter. If a version is returned then you have properly installed SKSE. If an error is returned you need to double check the installation steps.

    skse.ini Settings

While optional these settings should be beneficial to most users. Like the game itself, skse has it’s own .ini file. We just have to create it to be able to manipulate it.

    Skyrim Memory Patch

Different reports from different people have been given regarding the increase of the values suggested within the Skyrim Memory Patch portion of this guide. Some say that increasing the values give them CTD and Infinite Loading screens. Others say increasing them has helped to make their game even more stable than the suggested values. However, the settings given within this section have been shown to improve everyone’s game without exception.

    Skse Memory Patch Enabled

The Skyrim Memory Patch, create by Sheson, expands Skyrim’s memory block allocation and reserves to prevent and, in most cases, stop memory related CTD and Infinite Loading Screens. The two memory blocks that Skyrim utilizes are:

    – Default Heap memory: by default is 256MB

    – Scrap Heap memory: by default is also 256MB

This memory system was designed to give the player 512MB of on screen memory. It does this by maxing out the Default Heap memory then creating the Scrap Heap block as a backup. Once the Scrap Heap block is at it’s maximum capacity Skyrim will crash or freeze.

Skyrim Skse Memory Patch Download Download

However, being that Skyrim’s Scrap Heap allocation is unstable, filling up the Default Heap block will simply crash or freeze Skyrim without ever being able to utilize any of the Scrap Heap memory. To avoid the unstable Scrap Heap memory block but still be able to use the intended 512MB, Sheson created the “Skyrim Memory Patch” to assign an additional, amount of memory to the Default Heap block right from the game’s startup using the Skyrim Script Extender. All that we need to do to utilize the built in memory patch is establish the proper skse.ini file settings

Note: The mod Crash Fixes, provides very similar functions as the Memory Patch (as well as a lot more). If you do use the mod, you can skip this memory patch all together.

    -Mod Organizer Users

Open Mod Organizer. Right-click the SKSE – Scripts mod in the “Left Pane”. Select Open in explorer.

    Skyrim Skse Memory Patch Download

    -Non-Mod Organizer Users

Navigate to SteamSteamAppsCommonSkyrim and open the Data folder.

    -All Users

At this location, if a skse folder does not exist, right-click in the blank space and create New Folder. Name it skse. In the skse folder right-click and create a New Text Document. Rename the document being sure to delete the file extension .txt . Name the file skse.ini . If a window opens warning you about the file extension select Yes.

    In the skse.ini file add:

    [Memory]
    DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
    ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

The DefaultHeapInitialAlloc setting is actually a combination of both the Scrap Heap memory & the Default Heap memory size. With ScrapHeapSizeMB set to 256, and DefaultHeapInititalAlloc set to 768 you are actually receiving the games originally intended 512MB of on screen memory.

    The equation is:

DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB – (minus) ScrapHeapSizeMB = Total available on-screen memory.

    [Debug]
    WriteMiniDumps=1

-WriteMiniDumps=1: will allow SKSE to write a minidump to <My Documents>My GamesSkyrimSKSEMinidumps in the event of CTD. However, these are not easily read and generally need additional software and or someone who worked on SKSE to decipher them.

    [Display]
    iTintTextureResolution=256
    (vanilla)

    or

    iTintTextureResolution=512

    or

    iTintTextureResolution=1024

    or

    TintTextureResolution=2048

    – iTintTextureResolution: sets the resolution of warpaint.

    [General]
    ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

    – ClearInvalidRegistrations=1: allows SKSE to remove broken registrations on startup. This helps with game bloating and save file corruption prevention.

    [General]
    EnableDiagnostics=1

    – EnableDiagnostics=1: adds diagnostic messages that help to detect the cause of common crashes and issues. If a missing masterfile is causing CTD on startup it will tell you which file is missing and will list the missing files in the removed content dialogue when loading a save.

When you are done making changes or adding settings don’t forget to “Save”.

    Mod Authors

If you want to use SKSE with the CK to create mods, Non-Mod Organizer users will be able to do this right out of the box. However, Mod Organizer users, because MO is a 32 bit program it doesn’t properly execute the 64-bit Papyrus Script Compiler. To get the compiler to work with MO you need to run it in 32-bit mode. While there is a manual way of performing this task the easiest way is to download and install the Papyrus Compiler Patch for x64 Systems.

    1. Navigated to the Papyrus Compiler Patch. Open the FILES tab. Download the MAIN FILE. A single executable will download.
  • Double-click the executable to launch it. If you receive a User Account Control warning select Yes. When the Papyrus Compiler Patch.. window opens select Start.
  • If the patch cannot detect the PapyrusCompiler.exe be sure that you actually have the Skyrim Creation Kit installed. If the Creation Kit is installed select the ellipses “…” to the right of the Target File: field and navigate to:

    Steam/steamapps/common/Skyrim/Papyrus Compiler

    Double-click the PapyrusCompiler.exe . Select Start.

  • Read the pop-up message confirming that the Process succeeded. Select OK.
  • You can now launch the Creation Kit through Mod Organizer as normal and create SKSE based mods.
